Founded in 1977, the Forstbauer Family Natural Food Farm is a Certified Organic farm in Chilliwack. Mary and Hans Forstbauer were pioneers in the early organic farming movement 30 years ago and are still farming with integrity and passion. They raised their twelve children on the farm and 2 of have organic farms of their own today.
“We believe very strongly in healthy food from healthy soil,” says Mary Forstbauer. “We farm with the purpose of providing you with food that is not only of great quality and flavour, but also of great nutritional value. We farm with the understanding that the life and health of the soil is vitally important to insuring that the food we produce has everything it needs to fuel our bodies.”
Now in their 30th year of farming, the Forstbauer Farm produces a wide range of vegetables, as well as blueberries, strawberries, eggs and beef. They sell their products at many farmers’ markets in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.
Forstbauer Farm is a Biodynamic Farm, which is a step beyond organic. “All of the most important practices of a well managed sustainable organic farm such as composting, crop rotation and cover cropping are carried out on our Biodynamic Farm,” explains Mary. “But on top of that, the biodynamic farm is viewed as a ‘whole farm organism’, and a series of preparations are used to nourish the farm and the soil health. We use cosmic rhythms when dealing with the day-to-day activities on the farm.”
At Forstbauer Farm, soil and plant health is at the forefront of their philosophy on farming, and it shows in the quality of their farm products and in their willingness to help customers understand what they do whenever they meet them at farmers’ markets, both throughout the summer and at winter markets.
