Harry Kambolis, owner of Raincity Grill and C Restaurant, opened Raincity Grill in 1992 on English Bay in the heart of Vancouver’s West End, one of the city’s best-loved locations. With views of the Pacific Ocean and Coastal Mountains, the primal forests of Stanley Park steps away and a thriving cosmopolitan community on its doorstep, Raincity Grill fast became a neighbourhood favourite. The name Raincity had added significance for Kambolis: it was synonymous with Vancouver and resonated with locals.
A picture-perfect location and an apt name are not enough to ensure success and in Raincity Grill’s case, Kambolis’ vision to create a restaurant that celebrated the best of the region’s food and wine fit the times and the place to a T. Raincity Grill is Vancouver’s definitive regional restaurant.
The timing too was exactly right: The restaurant was embraced by Vancouverites who were increasingly pursuing healthier lifestyles and delighted in eating seafood, game and poultry, and organic vegetables from B.C., Alberta, Washington and Oregon. They were ready to explore wine and Raincity Grill’s wine list showcased the little known wines of the regions. Even better, more than 100 of these wines were available by the glass allowing guests to indulge and discover new tastes and to pair selections with different menu courses. And so Pacific Northwest cuisine emerged.
Raincity Grill continues to source indigenous ingredients, produce, meat, poultry and seafood and today, remarkably, 98% of everything on diners’ plates is organic and from BC. Committed to developing a menu based on local ingredients, the team behind Raincity Grill believes local resources will increase as restaurants look more and more to their own backyard and local waters for the best ingredients.
Raincity Grill, together with siblings C Restaurant and NU, has chosen to support producers who practice the sustainability of food resources indigenous to our region, and vows to continue this mission to become "21st Century Responsible".
